Resort skiing 👇🏼

This is our first season owning split boards and to say we are obsessed might be the biggest understatement of the year.

It combines 2 of our favorite activities- hiking & snowboarding and is such a fun way to get some exercise in!

A lot of ski resorts allow “uphill” before and after the resort opens. This basically means you can skin up the groomers and then ride down the resort runs!

I think my favorite part is that we usually get the entire run totally to ourselves. And as someone who HATES crowds when snowboarding, this has been such a huge bonus!!

We’ve been going to the resort at sunrise a good bit the last few weeks, but sentry and I have talking about doing a night run when it’s a full moon which happened to be the NIGHT before we flew out for Antarctica 😂

It was one of the more memorable nights we’ve had in Tahoe and we’re so stoked we had friends to experience it with.

This place never ceases to amaze me! Ilysm Tahoe!

Adult friendships >>>

When sentry and I lived on the road there wasn’t a ton of opportunity to meet and cultivate new friendships. It kind of felt like it was him and I against the world and before we realized it we became super reliant on each other for social situations and pretty much every other aspect of our lives. And while we love each other very much… it was A LOT of together time 🙃

One of the biggest reasons we chose to settle into a home base was to find community and other people in our lives that would help us re-find that individuality and independence that we have always had, but had lost in our time on the road.

But you guys… making friends as an adult is freaking HARD. It’s almost like dating but without the romantic side of things. You meet. Make small talk. Decide if you have any of the same interests. Be on your best behavior for a few months. Finally let your personality seep out. Decide if you are still interested in being friends. Finally start to feel comfortable around each other. AND THEN you start to build on the solid foundation of a friendship it took you months to make.

ITS. EXHAUSTING. It’s uncomfortable. It’s a TON of work and time and it doesn’t always work out… But gosh it’s sooooo worth it. We have just passed our one year mark of living full time in Tahoe and we have a solid group of incredible friends who accept and love us for who we are and that we are able to be fully ourselves around!

This past year I took my first ever ladies backpacking trip and it was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had in such a long time. It’s so wild thinking back to the times when sentry and I were SO co-dependent. I would have NEVER gone on a backpacking or climbing trip without him and now I’m looking forward to ALL of the ladies trips this year !!!

Making friends as an adult might be hard but it’s been one of the most fulfilling parts of our lives lately 🥹🙌🏽

📍Bonneville Salt Flats

I’ve always been SO intrigued by the salt flats and have always thought that all of the photos/videos I’ve seen from them looked fake so was super curious to see them for myself.

The Bonneville salt flats are a crust of salt that stretches over 30,000 acres that formed when a lake that once covered over 1/3 of Utah completely dried up 🤯

Today- it looks like a massive snow field that is totally out of place in the desert or like white moon dust laid out in a crazy geometrical pattern?!

I have no idea HOW to describe them or how cool it was to visit & if you’re traveling Utah I absolutely think it’s worth stopping!

Tips for visiting Bonneville Salt Flats 👇🏼

-go for sunrise or sunset!! The mid day sun can reflect off of the salt and be super dehydrating/draining.
-hike at least 1 mile into the flats! The cool geometric shapes don’t start to form until about 0.5 mi from the parking lot and they are truly what makes the flats so cool!!
-the parking lot is at the rest area located on i80 westbound. If you miss it there isn’t a turnaround for MILES so stay vigilant 😂
-WASH YOUR SHOES RIGHT AFTER! Otherwise the salt will corrode the material and ruin your shoes.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has been personally victimized my the wide mouth Nalgene bottle 🙋🏼‍♀️

Nalgenes are so useful on hiking and camping trips. They are lightweight, durable and have a nice cylindrical shape that easily fits into most backpacks. They also help reduce the use of single use plastic waste which we absolutely love for the environment 🙌🏼

Onto the downside… the wide mouth design. It’s super practical-easy to add ice to or filter water into… but I could never get over the fact that I am truly incapable of taking a sip of water from one without spilling all over myself.

UNITIL I found this tiny $10 product that completely changed the game and ended a life long love-hate relationship with my Nalgene. I ALWAYS get asked about it on trips so I am so stoked to share it with you all!

We love getting to the resort super early and cooking up a GOOD breakfast in the back of our car before the absolute mad house rush that comes that first hour before opening!

It’s saves time, money, and toonnnsss of parking stress and is our favorite way to start a long day of skiing!

When I started packing for our Antarctica expedition- I had NO IDEA where to start. Traveling to Antarctica isn’t like any trip we’ve ever been on before. The weather can change hour by hour and there’s so many amazing activities and adventures to account for!

I decided to break down my packing by each activity to make sure I had what I needed + it made it way less intimidating that way. And honestly I am SO thankful @whoatravel provides a detailed packing list that I was able to reference because without it I would be so lost!

Here is what I’m bringing for each activity!

This is your sign to never miss a sunrise!!!

Sentry and I always wake up for the first sunrise of the new year- and this year the forecast was NOT in our favor.

Our sunrise app said there was only a 30% chance of a good sunrise and the forecast showed 90% cloud coverage around sunrise time- which is never good when it comes to getting a ~colorful~ sky.

But that didn’t stop us from getting out and enjoying our favorite new years tradition!

We had 0 expectations for a pretty sky- so when the sun started rising and we started seeing a million different pinks and oranges and yellows and reds LIGHT up the sky I let out sooooo many excited yelps!!

I NEVER want to get out of bed when that 5 am alarm goes off- but once the sun finally rises (whether it’s a good one or not) i have NEVER EVER once regretted it.

So TAKE THIS as your sign to never miss a sunrise!

This might be controversial but… I used to thin

This might be controversial but…

I used to think that the outdoors were for everyone to enjoy and that gatekeeping beautiful locations was a pretentious and arrogant concept.

But after living on the road for years and now living in a beautiful outdoorsy tourist destination I understand why people feel the need to shield certain locations, when humans regularly come and destroy these beautiful places that were once taken care of by people that love them.

I’ve thought about this a lot in the past because I truly do not think gatekeeping is the answer. I want EVERYONE to have the opportunity to enjoy these outdoor spaces- but where’s the line???

I honestly feel like the biggest problem with gatekeeping is that it is a very exclusive and superior approach to protecting places when a lot of the problem is misinformation. We can’t do better if we aren’t allowed the space to have a conversation???

I think the most important thing we can do is to educate ourselves and others on the importance of taking care of our outdoor spaces and on HOW we can do so.

So with that in mind I wanted to re-share the seven principles of Leave No Trace and remind you that our DM’s are always open to conversation 🫶🏼

Leave No Trace Principles 👇🏼

-plan ahead and prepare
-travel & camp on durable surfaces
-dispose of waste properly (pack it in, pack it out)
-leave what you find
-minimize campfire impacts
-respect wildlife
-be considerate of others

And remember- if we all leave places just a tiny bit better than we found them (pick up ONE piece of trash) the world would be an infinitely better place!
